Wildlife Commission Seeks Public Input on Draft Catfish Management Plan

RALEIGH, NC (February 27, 2019) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking public input on its draft Catfish Management Plan until March 31, 2019.

The plan, which is an update to the Commission’s 2007 Catfish Management Plan, provides a general outline of goals and strategies that incorporates biological data with angler preferences to ultimately protect and enhance catfish resources in the state. Among the topics covered in the plan are:

• Collecting sound, science-based information on catfish populations across the state

• Identifying measures for conserving native catfish populations

• Discussing the challenges and ecological impacts of non-native catfish introductions

• Considering the social importance of catfish to citizens

• Providing recommendations for advancing catfish management across the state

• Identifying knowledge gaps and research needs

After collecting and considering all public comments, Commission staff will present comments at its board meeting in April prior to Wildlife Commissioners considering the plan for final adoption.
