Rock Fall Closes Remote N.C. Highway in Caldwell County
ASHEVILLE, NC (April 13, 2017)…A short portion of N.C. 90 north of Collettsville is temporarily closed due to a small rockslide.
Transportation Department officials noticed on Thursday morning that one large rock, about the size of large SUV, and several smaller rocks fell from an adjacent slope. A crew from the Caldwell County maintenance team immediately closed the area to traffic.
The road will be closed throughout the day while crews remove the boulder with a track hoe and clean the area. Secondary plans — which could extend the work into Friday — are in place to break the rock into smaller pieces with heavy equipment.
The best route around the slide utilizes Adako Road, the unpaved Brown Mountain Beach Road, to N.C. 90, Anthony Creek Road and Globe Road near Boone.
Cell phone reception is unlikely in the area rendering map apps useless.
Transportation officials remind motorists to obey all posted signs, slow down in work zones and be aware of their surroundings including other drivers.
