Lowes Foods City Park to open Saturday, December 17 in Hickory

HICKORY, NC (December 16, 2016)…The Lowes Foods City Park is opening to the public on Saturday, December 17. The park, located in Downtown Hickory on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue NW, was the first project spearheaded by Friends of Hickory, an organization of private citizens, dedicated to investing in the welfare and prosperity of the City of Hickory and its surrounding communities. The group spent over two years raising funds for the park from generous citizens and local businesses who are committed to enhancing the community.

The park’s components consist of water play, art, education, music, local craftsmanship, and top of the line, modern play equipment. The park is intended to bring the community together, as well as attract residents and visitors to Downtown Hickory. It will also be a destination along the future City Walk and was designed with that in mind.

“The City of Hickory is excited to be opening its newest park to the public this Saturday,” said Hickory’s Parks and Recreation Director Mack McLeod. “We are extremely grateful to the Friends of Hickory and appreciate their vision of Lowes Foods City Park and their efforts in making that vision a reality.”

Allison Holtzman, Co-Chair of Friends of Hickory, explained, “We think that this park is one of many great projects to come, that will reshape our city and make us known regionally, and even nationwide, as a successful and desirable city; a great place to live and work. Making our downtown more alive and engaging our citizens to invest in Hickory is economic development. We look forward to seeing increased activity and liveliness downtown, which is the front door of our city.”

A grand opening event is being planned for March 18, 2017. Until then, the park is open for rest, play, and conversation.
