Volunteers move dirt at Beall Street Gardens in Lenoir

LENOIR, NC (May 11, 2018)…On Saturday, May 5, 2018, a group of volunteers from Martin Marietta Aggregates, First United Methodist Church, West Caldwell High School, the Master Gardeners Association, the Caldwell County Agricultural Extension, and community members donated a lot of time and muscle power at the Beall Street Community Gardens.

The group worked to fill 26 new raised beds, built and placed by the City Public Works Department, with 28 cubic yards of gardening soil.

“The volunteers worked hard and moved a lot of soil using only shovels, wheelbarrows, and rakes,” Public Works Jared Wright said. “We would like to offer all of these volunteers a huge ‘Thank you’ for their work.”

Due to recent rains and the site’s topography, Wright said his crews were not able to use heavy using equipment to place the soil.
