Coffee with the Director – Sharon Harmon with Yokefellow

Did you ever think about being homeless, not knowing where to go, where to turn for help? What about housing? Food? Shelter? A shower? A place to sleep? What if it were cold, rainy, hot outside? What would you do?

Come find out how one community agency, Yokefellow, strives to meet that and many other needs. Executive Director Sharon Harmon has been with Yokefellow since June 2010. She is a Lenoir native and has been a non-profit Administrator since the 1980’s. Find out how Yokefellow got started by those who saw a need and found a way to meet it through the faith-based community and individuals who pooled their time, talents and resources to do as Christ instructed, “….unto the least of these my brethren.” Hear how she and her staff meet needs daily, striving to provide food assistance, emergency assistance, clothing/household items, and emergency shelter to those in crisis. You will be blessed by her story of this selfless group of people who seek to serve. You will be amazed at all they do and perhaps find a place where you can get involved.

Trivia questions (come hear the presentation to find the answers!)

In what year did Yokefellow enter its first building and where?

Where was Yokefellow’s second location and in what year was that move made?

What did Yokefellow celebrate in May 1994?

The Glass River – Book signing and reading with Laura Bush Sedlacek

Local author and poet, Laura Sedlacek writing as LB Sedlacek, will discuss and give a reading from her mystery novel “The Glass River.”  The book is set in Caldwell County, specifically Happy Valley. It has been nominated for the 2018 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award. A book signing will follow the reading. Laura is the creator of “Poetry in LA (Lenoir Area) and a published book of poems about Lenoir and Caldwell County. She is the author of several other books. She holds a BA from Lenoir-Rhyne University and an MA from Wake Forest University and is a local business owner. In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming and volunteering.

Summary: Private Detective Chance Richardson stumbles upon the murder of Al Bryant near Happy Valley, NC, the site of the infamous real-life Tom Dooley murder of Laura Foster, after he intercepted a CB broadcast asking for help. A local man, Henry Lee Coffey, is found near the crime scene and is arrested for the murder. Henry’s wife was killed in a similar manner several years earlier, causing Henry to abandon his job, home, and to drink. Chance’s pal, news reporter Kelly Grant, is asked by her high school nemesis Mary Beth Coffey Dula, to check into the crime on behalf of Henry. Chance and Kelly start nosing around the former Henry Coffey house, Al Bryant’s house, into Ruby’s murder, in and around the Happy Valley area, and dig a little into the Tom Dooley legend.

Come hear Laura as she reads excerpts from her book and will sign any purchases after the program. I’ve started digging into mine! How about you?
