Three Caldwell County US 321 Intersections to be transformed to “Superstreet” Intersections in 2019
CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (September 18, 2017)…According to the NCDOT, Caldwell County will see road construction on US 321 as early as 2019. Three intersections will undergo a transformation to a “Superstreet” intersection design.
What is a “Superstreet” design?
A superstreet, also known as a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT), J-turn, or reduced conflict intersection, is a type of road intersection that is a variation of the Michigan left. In this configuration, traffic on the minor road is not permitted to proceed straight across the major road or highway.
What are the benefits of a “Superstreet” design?
The so-called “superstreet” traffic design results in significantly faster travel times, and leads to a drastic reduction in automobile collisions and injuries, according to North Carolina State University researchers who have conducted the largest-ever study of superstreets and their impacts.
What intersections?
Mt. Herman Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CA – Project Cost: $2,170,000)
Pine Mountain Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CB – Project Cost: $2,700,000)
Mission Road/US 321 (TIP: U-4700CC – Project Cost: $2,750,000)
We have put together a special US 321 Widening Project Website Page to help better explain the entire project. We have also put together an unofficial US 321 Widening Project Facebook Page.
