Thank You, School Counselors

LENOIR, NC (February 8, 2019) — This week staff and parents expressed their gratitude to school counselors during School Counselor Week: Feb. 4 – 9 for all their efforts behind-the-scenes, supporting students and families – making a difference in their lives.

They have a presence at the elementary, middle and high schools levels, where they implement a comprehensive school counseling program and collaborate with school staff, parents, and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment.

“Counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic, career and social/emotional development,” said Superintendent Dr. Donald Phipps “They are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills, set informed career goals, and realize their full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community.”

School counselors must be enrolled in completing an advanced degree in counseling or currently hold a master’s degree. They are required to have state certification in school counseling. Maintaining their certification includes ongoing professional development to stay current with educational reform and challenges facing today’s students.
