NEBO, NC (January 3, 2017)…Work on the Armstrong Timber Sale and road work on closed sections of Limekiln Road (Forest Service Road 469) are expected to begin Monday, January 9 on the Grandfather Ranger District of the Pisgah National Forest.
The closure will impact hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians accessing the Woods Mountain Loop. The only section of the loop that will have activity is Bad Fork (Trail 227) and the lower 2.5 miles of Limekiln Road directly behind the gate.
While the closure will be a short term inconvenience, the project will improve the route and watershed health and restore native species diversity on the surrounding forest.
This project is part of the Grandfather Restoration Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) Project, an 8-year project designed to restore 40,000 acres of the Grandfather Ranger District. The Armstrong Creek project will include four of the five CFLR objectives including restoring fire adapted vegetation, improving wildlife habitat and forest composition, maintaining viable native plant communities, and improving watersheds.
