Teacher to Teacher – visiting teacher tells her story

LENOIR, NC (May 1, 2019) — Sometimes hearing it from another teacher makes all the difference in the world and in this case, there is a world of difference in the learning environment, resources and expectations from this teacher’s perspective.

Please join us in welcoming and hearing from Temwani Chilenga a teacher from Lilongwe, Malawi, who is visiting Davenport A+ School.

The Education Foundation is hosting a presentation with Temwani as the guest speaker on May 8, 3:00-5:00 pm at the Education Center in the Board Room.

Temwani and her students walk an average of 90 minutes to get to school. They are not fed breakfast or lunch. Sometimes a student dies of starvation.

They have no electricity. Temwani’s link to the outside world is her phone, which is solar powered. Her students have never seen a television or watched a movie. Temwani is the guest of Carly Swartz, 3rd-grade teacher at Davenport, and her 3rd graders are learning about, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.” They are reading the children’s book and learning about the boy who brought electricity to his area of Malawi after reading a book and salvaging parts for a windmill. 

Since she’s been here visiting in the Caldwell County Schools, Temwani is already touching lives and hearts!
