Stop repeat offenders
Special to the Caldwell Journal by Colleen Sheehey-Church…If you woke up today wanting to make a difference, I have an opportunity for you to do TWICE as much.
An ignition interlock is an in-car breathalyzer that prevents a convicted drunk driver from even starting the vehicle if alcohol is detected. This device has prevented more than 1.77 million drunk driving attempts and are more effective than license suspensions.
What we cannot know for sure is how many lives it has saved. But I’ll tell you, if the number is more than one – and I know it is – then, I am grateful.
You have proudly stood up to be counted as one of the people committed to ending the scourge of drunk driving. Today, will you give $5 to be one of 5,000 people demanding this common sense protection for everyone, not just those in a few lucky zip codes? When you give today, a generous donor has agreed to DOUBLE your gift up to $10,000, increasing its lifesaving power.
It saddens me to hear stories of people who would have been spared the devastation of a crash or the loss of a loved one if the protection of ignition interlocks had just been in place sooner.
The finish line is closer than ever before. Will you help us cross it?
Last year, we achieved amazing success. Vermont passed an ignition interlock law. So did Maryland and the District of Columbia — all in one year.
Now, 28 states and D.C. mandate offenders are sober to start their vehicle.
But it is not enough. Twenty-two states lack this protection. We need your help to fix that.
Will you make a $5 gift to expand this protection?
Thank you for your generosity, Colleen Sheehey-Church (MADD National President).
