Salvation Army of Greater Hickory and High Country to celebrate National Salvation Army Week
HICKORY, NC (May 10, 2024) ⇒ The Salvation Army of Greater Hickory and High Country is excited to celebrate National Salvation Army Week May 13th thru 18th, 2024. Since its inception in 1925, the Hickory Corps has grown to serve those in most need in Alexander, Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, McDowell, Watauga, and Wilkes County.
Reflecting on 2023, The Salvation Army of Greater Hickory and High Country helped 11,993 individuals in crisis. Our Shelter of Hope provided 29,875 nights of lodging and served 126,095 meals and snacks. The Shelter is open 365 days a year and is the only shelter in Catawba County to house single men, women, and families. Currently capacity is 85 beds, and the shelter stays full most days. Anyone can come to the shelter for a warm meal between the hours of 5 pm and 6 pm daily. On the average 100 meals are served nightly. During extreme cold weather “white flag” nights are implemented where anyone seeking shelter is invited to stay the night.
Our crisis help center filled 4,052 grocery orders, helped 178 households with financial assistance, provided $55,306 worth of clothing and Furniture vouchers, and distributed 891 personal comfort kits. In partnership with the community and Food Lion Feeds the Crisis Help Center continues to provide weekly fresh/perishable groceries to families every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm through its drive through “Loaves and Fishes” food distribution. The food pantry provides supplemental non-perishable food items to families and individuals who have a place to cook on Mondays 1 pm to 4 pm and Wednesdays 9 am to 12 pm.
