Ribbon cutting ceremony planned for Hickory City Park

HICKORY, NC (September 28, 2018) —The City of Hickory and the Greater Hickory Tennis Association (GHTA) invite the public to attend a ribbon cutting at Hickory City Park on Saturday, October 13, at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will celebrate the completion of tennis complex improvements at Hickory City Park.

Improvements included a major parking lot renovation, which increased parking capacity from 20 parking spaces to 122 parking spaces, a new entrance road into the park, as well as a new 1,900 square foot multi-use facility featuring restrooms, an indoor meeting space, and an outdoor covered shelter area.

In April 2015, the City of Hickory joined with the Greater Hickory Tennis Association in a priority use agreement for tennis complex improvements at Hickory City Park.  The GHTA agreed to contribute $125,000 toward the improvement project, and that commitment was paid in full on August 23, 2018. 

“The renovations at Hickory City Park not only enhance the park and create parking for tennis tournaments and events, they will be utilized for the future Riverwalk.  Once the Riverwalk is constructed and open, pedestrian access will be available from Hickory City Park to the Riverwalk,” said Hickory Parks and Recreation Director Mack McLeod.

“The Greater Hickory Tennis Association is proud to partner with the City of Hickory and the Recreation Department on the new Hickory City Park.  It has far exceeded our expectations, and we are excited to have this updated facility for everyone to enjoy,” added Linney Teague, president of the GHTA.  “We would also like to recognize our Major Court Sponsors: Corning, Inc., Steve White Motors, Inc., Benefit Solutions, Inc./Linney Teague, David and Elaine Myers, and Kathy Kim.”

Hickory City Park is located at 1581 12th Street Drive NW and now features eight lighted tennis courts, a multi-purpose facility with an indoor meeting room, an outdoor covered shelter, and restrooms, as well as access to a paved bikeway and the Lake Hickory Trails, a system of recently completed mountain biking and nature trails.
