Pioneers Shake, Rattle and Roll Spartans by Dan O’Neal

SAWMILLS. NC (September 21, 2018) — There still lingers the idyllic day spent at the Rock and Roll Fame recently. Upon arriving at Spartan Stadium early in the third frame of the contest and South putting the ball in the end zone, my thought was perhaps the Spartans were about to make a comeback or at the very least make the score more respectable.

This, of course, did not happen. On the Pioneers next possessions, they ran jet sweep after jet sweep for many positive yards. They also broke many Spartan tackle attempts as well as running the football through their defense on other plays, hence the reference to “shake, rattle, and roll” in route to a 46-12 Watauga win. The Spartans were also rattled with two pick-sixes to begin the contest. As one in the press box, it was a frustrating evening for South as Watauga made very few mistakes.

On the other hand, credit must be given for the positive yardage achieved by South. Spencer Piercy ran for ninety-four yards with one score on fourteen touches and Avery Raynor and Jason Martin combined on eight of fifteen passing with Martin throwing a thirteen-yard strike for a score to Piercy early in the second half.

In other area scores last Friday evening, Alexander Central pummeled West Caldwell, where the Spartans with a 1-3 record, travel to this Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30pm. Also, Hibriten put the quietus on Bunker Hill 55-0. Now that “Dan” is back from the amazing 1,800-mile journey, hope to have more in the way of game statistics etc.
