PBIS brings out the best in students

LENOIR, NC (January 15, 2019) — The Board of Education recognized teachers and administrators for receiving statewide recognition awarded by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to schools that have successfully implemented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a program that demonstrates the ability for faculty and staff to work together productively, to use school data effectively, and to develop a support system for student behaviors.

“We are very proud of these schools for their continuous work during the 2017-2018 school year that enhanced the behavioral practices as well as the organizational systems in their schools,” said Keith Hindman, Middle School Director and school district PBIS Coordinator. “The result of this initiative continues to have a positive impact on the social culture, learning and teaching environments, and individual behavioral supports for all students. I would like to thank all of the school-based PBIS team members as well as all the staff members of these schools for continuing to look for ways to enhance their abilities to meet the needs of our students.”

The following schools received banners and Certificates of Recognition from both the NC Department of Public Instruction and the Caldwell County Board of Education at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 14:

Granite Falls Middle and Lower Creek Elementary received statewide recognition as a Green Ribbon School, defined as a Tier 1 school with a PBIS In-School Coach and team in place that meets monthly.
Baton Elementary, Davenport A+ School, Gamewell Elementary, Hudson Middle, Sawmills Elementary and Valmead Elementary earned the statewide designation as a Behavior Support Model School based on the completed levels of involvement that reached Tier 1 and advanced to Tier 2.
Gamewell Middle School received the distinguished designation of NC Exemplar School, the highest designation awarded in PBIS. Gamewell Middle School became the first school in the school district in 2007 to adopt the initiative, and Gamewell Middle continues to be a model PBIS school of excellence throughout the state.
