Patterson School in Happy Valley Invites Student Gardeners!

Farm Manager Ian Driscoll

HAPPY VALLEY, NC (May 13, 2017)…A summer-long class in organic gardening for students ages ten to thirteen / grades 4 – 6, will be offered at the Patterson School campus in Happy Valley for up to twelve students every Wednesday morning from 9 to 11am, during the summer vacation: Wednesdays, June 14 through August 23, 2017.

Instructor will be Ian Driscoll, Farm Manager with the Patterson School Foundation. Ian is a 2014 graduate of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC and has assumed management of the 1400-acre farm at the historic Patterson School.

Students will raise familiar summer vegetable crops – corn, green beans, lettuce, tomato, carrots, potatoes, squash, cucumber, flowers and herbs. They will also practice companion planting to discourage insect pests. Gardening will be done organically in three raised beds on campus, and a flower garden will be planted, as well.

Participants will prepare the soil, plant the seeds, weed, water and harvest their crops. Additionally, they will visit the beautiful nearby gardens of Cheryl and Emerson Dickey.  Fee for the summer-long class will be $35 and will include all materials.

For more information and to register for class, please contact Ian Driscoll at
