Parts of Highway 321 in northern Caldwell County closed due to snow and ice

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (December 30, 2016)…Caldwell County Emergency Services in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Highway Patrol have temporarily closed parts of Highway 321 due to snow and ice.

Highway 321 is temporarily closed from Richlands Road to the Caldwell County/Watauga County line in Blowing Rock until further notice. Snow and ice accumulating is causing vehicles to slide off the road way.

For more information about the Caldwell County closure and any further closures in other counties, contact the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

***SLICK ROADS POSSIBLE IN PORTIONS OF THE FOOTHILLS THIS MORNING***

Light snow overnight has caused poor travel conditions to develop on roadways where the temperature has been below freezing. Frozen slush or black ice is present in spots. This mainly includes higher elevations of the foothills near the blue ridge…as well as the rim of the French Broad Valley. If you are driving in these areas, this morning…slow down and use extra caution. Leave more space between vehicles than normal. Road temperatures should warm enough by late morning to melt the ice.
