Born April 16, 1930 in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Edwin M. Bowman and Minnie Bell Smith Bowman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Willie Joe Curtis; brothers Jessie Bowman, Ray Bowman, Harmon Wesley Bowman, Kenneth Bowman; sisters Mabel Sherrill, Elizabeth Mackie, Marcell Bowman, and Mary Doris Icard.
Zelma is survived by her son, Marty Curtis and wife Beverly of Granite Falls; her daughter, Belinda Starnes and husband Josh of Granite Falls; two grandsons, Tim Curtis and wife Tammy of Collinsville, OK, and Derek Starnes of Granite Falls; granddaughter, Monica Childers and husband David; five great grandchildren, Zachary Childers, Courtney Childers, Tanner Curtis, Chase Curtis, and Faith Curtis.
As youngest of 9 children, Zelma cared for her siblings and their children and grandchildren. Sunday luncheons were very important to her and she loved sharing family stories around the table. She was a huge Duke fan and enjoyed sparring with the Carolina fans in her family and in her church. She was a loving wife and mother and her life was all about her family. She loved attending any event her children and grandchildren participated in whether dancing or playing sports.
Zelma was a loving, wise and fun person and made everyone around her feel that they were very special. Her home was the “hub of the wheel” and everyone there felt totally at home. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her nurturing and incredible hospitality, not to leave out her amazing chicken and dumplings.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018, 3:00 p.m. at Grace Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. David Nolan and Rev. Monica Childers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Tim Curtis, Derek Starnes, Phillip Bowman, Ronnie Bowman, Kenny Bowman, Danny Bowman, Zachary Childers and Bill Johnson will serve as pallbearers.
