Newcomers of Catawba Valley to Host Speakers on Shingles

HICKORY, NC (January 6, 2018)…The Centers for Disease Control says that one out of every three people will develop shingles in their lifetime.

Newcomers of Catawba Valley will hear about a new powerful vaccine against shingles at its meeting on Wednesday, January 10.  Speakers from the Catawba Valley Health Department will talk about the new vaccine that CDC says is far better than Zostavax, the vaccine that most of us have had.  Two representatives of the Health Department will present on Shingrix, which reduces the risk of shingles by more than 50 percent.  Even if you have already had the Zostavax vaccine, you should have the new vaccine, which is recommended for all healthy people 50 years of age and older, according to the CDC.

The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. on January 10 in the old terminal building of Hickory Regional Airport, 3101 9th Ave. Dr. NW.  The public is invited and welcome to attend.

For more information about Zostavax, go to www.cdc.gov/shingles.

Newcomers of Catawba Valley is primarily a social organization that enables new and long-time residents of the region to meet, make friends and participate in a variety of activities, including support of area charities and service programs.  The club is made up of men and women and does not limit how long a member may belong.  General meetings are usually held at the Hickory Regional Airport at 10:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.  For more information, visit www.newcomersofcv.com.
