Nearing time to register children for kindergarten
CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (February 27, 2017)…Children who will turn 5 years old on or before August 31, 2017 will be eligible to register for kindergarten this spring. Parents are encouraged to register their kindergarten-aged child early at their transfer approved or home district school.
“Kindergarten children have new and exciting learning experiences ahead of them in the classroom,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone. “We hold kindergarten screening to introduce children and their parents to their new educational environment and to help students and parents feel better prepared and excited about that first day of school.”
At kindergarten screening, students and parents meet kindergarten teachers, tour the school campus, and become more familiar with the learning environment. Parents also have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the school parent organization, WrapAround (before and after school program), and child nutrition program.
For parents to register their child in kindergarten, they should bring the following documents to the Kindergarten Screening:
• Personal and emergency information;
• Verification of birth date — a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate or other satisfactory evidence;
• proof of residence (i.e. current utility bill, property deed or rental lease); and
• the child’s updated immunization record.
North Carolina law also requires that every child have a completed Kindergarten Health Assessment form on or before the first day of school, but no more than 12 months before the date of school entry. Kindergarten Health Assessment Forms are available at schools and/or the Caldwell County Health Department.
