GRANITE FALLS, NC (February 4, 2017)…The Granite Falls History Committee is pleased to announce the official reopening of the Granite Falls History and Transportation Museum on Saturday, February 11th. Located at 107 Falls Avenue, the museum has been closed to make improvements. In addition to new permanent exhibits, there will be copies of The Granite Falls Press for visitors to read. The Press was a weekly newspaper published from 1952 until 1986.
New exhibits in the museum include a painting of Downtown Granite Falls by Dustin Turnmyre, exclusive photos by Terry Holt of the mill pond, dam, and falls which gave the town its name, a wall size photo of the Town circa 1950, photos/artifacts not previously on display, additional Granite Falls High School memorabilia, and an expanded sports exhibit.
Also during the month of February, the History Committee is seeking quilts to display during the month of March in honor of National Quilting Month. Quilts may be left at the museum in February on Saturdays from noon until 4 p. m. and on Sundays from 2 until 4 p. m. Be sure to put the name and phone number of the owner with each quilt. For more information about the quilt exhibit, call Barbara Ross at 828-396-1668.
This is the Fifth Annual Quilt Exhibit, and organizers have decided to present a People’s Choice Award. Visitors to the museum during the month of March will be able to vote for their favorite quilt. The votes will be tallied on Sunday, April 2nd during a reception for quilters. The winner will receive a ribbon and a certificate.
Future exhibits at the museum include Bank of Granite memorabilia (May), local churches (September), and military (November). Persons wishing to tour the museum outside of normal hours may call the Town Office at 828-396-3131 to make arrangements.
