It’s time to register children for kindergarten

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (March 15, 2018)…Children who will turn 5 years old on or before August 31, 2017 will be eligible to register for kindergarten this spring. Parents are encouraged to register rising kindergarten students now during kindergarten screening at the elementary school located in their attendance area.

“Kindergarten children will have many new and exciting learning experiences in the years to come,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone. “We want that first experience in school to be positive and memorable, and Kindergarten Screening is that warm, friendly introduction to education. This well-organized event provides the perfect setting to meet teachers, other parents, and learn more about educational opportunities before the school year begins.”

At kindergarten screening, students and parents meet kindergarten teachers, tour the school, and become more familiar with the learning environment. Representatives from the parent organizations, WrapAround (before and after school program), and the child nutrition program provide more information to parents, and all registered children leave with a Readiness Kit filled with school supplies and activities that will engage students in learning over the summer months.

For parents to register their child in kindergarten, they should bring the following documents to the Kindergarten Screening:

· Personal and emergency information;

· Verification of birth date — a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate or other satisfactory evidence;

· proof of residence (i.e. current utility bill, property deed or rental lease); and

· the child’s updated immunization record.

North Carolina law also requires that every child have a completed Kindergarten Health Assessment form on or before the first day of school, but no more than 12 months before the date of school entry. Kindergarten Health Assessment Forms are available at schools and/or the Caldwell County Health Department.
