Inspiring teachers with an author visit

LENOIR, NC (February 25, 2023) — Administration and faculty from elementary schools participated in districtwide professional development today as guest speaker Lester L. Laminack, author of Three Hens and A Peacock, emphasized the importance of reading aloud to students, an event sponsored by the Education Foundation Inc of Caldwell County.

“Reading aloud is no frivolous activity,” said Laminack. “It is solid instructional work when our intentions are clear.”

Some of the benefits of reading aloud shared during the presentation included teaching students to express thoughts clearly, helping students to increase vocabulary and developing transition and fluency in literacy.

Laminack demonstrated these strategies as he read from his light-hearted read-aloud favorite Three Hens and a Peacock to an audience of elementary teachers, media coordinators and school principals. All attendees received a copy of the book, compliments of the Education Foundation.

Lester L. Laminack is a specialist in children’s literacy and professor emeritus at Western Carolina University. He has written numerous books and articles for educators.
