Hickory Police Explorer program teaches youth about policing while cultivating life skills

HICKORY, NC (September 28, 2018) — Hickory Police Department is the home of Police Explorer Post #392.  Explorer Post #392 is a community-based youth organization for young men and women, ages 14 to 20.  The Explorers are chartered through the Boy Scouts of America.

“Law Enforcement Exploring provides a unique opportunity for Hickory youth to not only learn about career opportunities in the field, but also to develop strong leadership skills, build character, and encourage good citizenship,” said Lt. Scott Hildebrand.  “The program equips young people with the skills and self-confidence to be successful both today and in their future careers.”

The Explorer program provides hands-on, interactive experience in all facets of policing.   Explorers assist in special operations, such as parade detail or assisting police with in-service training.  In addition, the program is designed to teach valuable life skills, as well as build character, boost self-confidence, and offer opportunities for volunteering and personal growth.

When asked about her experience in the Explorer program, Jena Castle stated, “Being in the police explorers was great!  You not only get to learn more about the criminal justice system, you get hands on experience!  You also have the opportunity to make connections with people experienced in your field, as well as others who are just starting out.  I would highly recommend joining.”

Explorers meet the first Tuesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Floyd W. Lucas, Jr. Police Headquarters, located at 347 2nd Avenue SW.

Program applicants must currently be enrolled in or graduated from high school, be of good character, and have parent/guardian approval for participation.  There is a four-month probationary period for all Explorers.  Any violation of federal, state, or local law will result in suspension or termination in accordance with Hickory Police Department policy.

If interested in joining Explorer Post #392, please contact Lt. Scott Hildebrand at (828) 324-2060.
