Granite Falls Middle School goes on hard lockdown

GRANITE FALLS, NC (February 8, 2019) — At approximately 2pm on Friday, February 8th Granite Falls Middle School went on “hard lockdown” due to information that was received about a student possibly having a weapon.

“We received information that a student at the middle school had a weapon on school grounds. We located the student and did not find a weapon. We are still investigating to determine why and how this information was disseminated.” — Granite Falls Police Department Chief Chris Jenkins

“GFMS was placed on lockdown today for about 20 minutes.  There was a report of contraband on campus.  In response, Granite Falls police officers assisted the school’s School Resource Officer.  The officers, School Resource Officer, and school principal Melissa Costin conducted a search and nothing was found.  Once safety was assured, the regular schedule was resumed.  Student safety is the most important thing to the district and lockdowns are viable options to place schools in a more secure and safe posture.” — Caldwell County Schools

This incident was not connected to the other incident at 38 Laurel Street in Granite Falls that took place at approximately 7:09am on Friday, February 8, 2019.

If we receive more information, we will be sure to pass it along…
