GFMakerS Open House set for January 19th

GRANITE FALLS, NC (December 21, 2016)…Tucked away in the basement of Granite Falls Middle School is a unique learning area for students. Granite Falls is one of the first schools in the Foothills to house a dedicated MakerSpace. Through funding from local organizations such as WalMart, Corning, Blue Ridge Electric, Caldwell County Schools Education Foundation, and Google, an unused basement area has been transformed into this dynamic space.

Worktables, benches, stools and items such as Raspberry Pi’s, Arduinos, Makey Makeys, embroidery and sewing machines, a 3D printer and 3D pens are all available for the students. Other items include electronic building blocks such as littleBits and Snap Circuits as well as iPads, MacBooks, Chromebooks, Spheros and even a Cricket cutting machine. The area also boasts three LEGO walls for design and modeling and an AV room complete with a green screen for video recording.

The MakerSpace, known as GFMakerS, is also creating a name for themselves as a global littleBits chapter, one of only six in the state.

In January, this exceptional space is holding two open houses to raise public awareness and show appreciation to their granters. GFMakerS will hold a Community Open House on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Parking is available on the street parallel to 321-A in front of the school and the MakerSpace is located in the basement between the main entrance and the auditorium. Look for the GFMakerS signs and lights. Please come and see the exciting opportunities this space provides for the students of Granite Falls Middle School.
