Fire crews control brush fire near Granite Falls

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (November 7, 2016)…A brush fire on property owned by Corpening Investments scorched approximately 15+ acres Monday afternoon.  Officials were not sure what caused the fire but did say that the drought conditions were a contributing factor.  The fire was located just off Lower Cedar Valley Road at Crystal Creek Lane – at the end of Cool Spring Lane in the Sawmills Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department fire district.  No injuries or property damage were reported.

Sawmills Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department first responded to the call.  Several other fire departments offered mutual aid including Granite Falls Fire Department, Grace Chapel Fire Department, Hudson Fire Department, North Catawba Fire Department, Gamewell Fire Department, Little River Fire Department and Rhodhiss Fire Department.  Lovelady Rescue Squad was on hand to offer rehab for the fire fighters.  Caldwell County Emergency Services and the Caldwell County Fire Marshall’s office was also on hand.

The North Carolina Forest Service also brought in substantial resources to battle the fire including crews, helicopter and bulldozer.

The Granite Falls Police Department, Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. Highway Patrol all provided traffic control.

Caldwell County N.C. Forest Ranger Russell C. Dellinger, Jr. told us the fire was contained and under control as of 4pm on November 7, 2016 – crews were working on moping up and putting out hot spots.
