DWI Enforcement Top Priority This Fourth…SHP to Increase Patrols

RALEIGH, NC (July 2, 2018)…As families across the nation anticipate the upcoming July 4 holiday, the State Highway Patrol is hopeful safety remains a top priority during every scheduled event.

While hot dogs, hamburgers, pools and fireworks will be used by many to celebrate the nation’s independence, others will also consume alcoholic beverages.  Unfortunately, consuming alcohol is not always done responsibly, at times leading to impaired driving.

In 2017, SHP investigated 248 vehicle collisions on the fourth alone.  Among those, 61 motorists were injured and 3 were killed as a result of a needless mistake. Impaired driving contributed to 1 fatality and 8 injuries.

“We all should reflect on how very fortunate we are to call America home”, said Col. Glenn McNeill, Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol.  “During our celebrations, safety should always take precedence when enjoying friends and family.”

SHP along with the Wildlife Resources Commission’s Law Enforcement Division will be participating in a campaign entitled “On the Road/On the Water; Don’t Drink and Drive” throughout the holiday period. The purpose of the campaign will focus on removing impaired motorists from both waterways and roadways.  The campaign will begin Tuesday, July 3 and end Thursday, July 5.

Those who consume alcoholic beverages are encouraged to do so responsibly by choosing a designated driver or using a ride-sharing service or taxi.
