Deer Park Fire closes portion of Appalachian Trail

Mars Hill, NC (April 30, 2018)…A portion of the Appalachian Trail from Garenflo Gap to Hot Springs is temporarily closed due to the 7-acre Deer Park Fire burning southwest of Hot Springs.

The fire is moving downslope toward Highway 209. At this time, the only structure threatened is the Deer Park Shelter on the Appalachian Trail.

Approximately 20 firefighters from the U.S Forest Service and the North Carolina Forest Service are responding to the fire including NC state aircraft.

The Deer Park Fire is located in Madison County which is north of Asheville.
