Deputy Klutz was 25-years-old when he was shot and killed in the line of duty on Friday, September 19, 2008, while responding to a domestic call.
Klutz was a 2001 graduate of South Caldwell High School and a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Criminal Justice. He served for 18 months with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office following three months service with the Hickory Police Department. Before working in law enforcement, Klutz had worked as a lifeguard at the Granite Falls Recreation Center, helped coach the Granite Falls swim team and served at Lovelady Fire & Rescue for two years.
At 2 p.m., Sunday, the Annual Officer Down Memorial Motorcycle Ride will begin at the Sheriff’s office, cross the County and end for a brief ceremony at the County Officer Down Memorial at the Caldwell County Court House. All area motorcycle riders are invited to participate in the ride.
