Caldwell County Schools helping coastal schools recover from Florence

LENOIR, NC (October 4, 2018) — Even though Caldwell County was spared from the ill effects of Hurricane Florence, coastal schools and communities are still recovering from the devastation caused by flooding and hurricane-force winds.

As is the case with other disasters in the state, Caldwell County Schools’ staff and students always reach out to assist. Schools in the district have already stepped up to help collect supplies for those affected by Hurricane Florence.

Students at Collettsville School raised $300 for the hurricane disaster relief efforts by holding a schoolwide Hat Day to raise funds. At Sawmills Elementary School, staff and students collected $1,357 to help Eastern Elementary School located in Beaufort County, thanks to additional support from Marx LLC, Sawmills Elementary business partner. The principal of Eastern Elementary School is Seth Smith, a graduate of Hibriten High School.

Hibriten, West Caldwell and South Caldwell High School have joined together to help staff and students at Cape Fear High School, where fierce winds and flooding caused severe damage. Hibriten collected more than $1,000 in donations at its Homecoming game, and South and West Caldwell continue to collect donations and needed items, such as toiletries, underwear, socks, and diapers

Educational state leaders, in conjunction with business partners, have created Fast NC as an online collection site to aid students and teachers. The public is invited to visit the NC Public Schools website to learn more on how to contribute financially to this relief fund which will provide needed resources to students and teachers in eastern North Carolina.
