Caldwell County closes shelter and emergency operations

LENOIR, NC (September 17, 2018) — Caldwell County Emergency Services, along with the American Red Cross have closed the shelter at West Caldwell High School.

The shelter housed up to 13 people at various times throughout the weekend of Hurricane Florence. Several residents brought two dogs and a cat with them. All have left the shelter or have been placed at other locations.

The shelter was fully staffed through the weekend with representatives of the American Red Cross, the Caldwell County Department of Social Services, the Health Department and volunteers from CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and REACT (Radio Emergency Associated Communications Teams.)

The EOC (Emergency Operations Center) will shut down as of noon today.  The EOC was in full operation, fully staffed from Friday morning to today to deal with the remains of Hurricane Florence.

The flooding that was forecast did not occur in Caldwell County.

There was one injury to a firefighter with Little River Fire Department when he was struck by a falling tree. The firefighter was treated and released on Saturday.

Wilson Creek rose to seven feet over normal on Sunday night. Brown Mountain Beach Road was flooded at both entrances, but no homes were affected, and no injuries reported. Wilson Creek was going back down at this time and the road is back open.

There is a slight chance of flooding as runoff of the heavy rain that fell in the mountains travels down the mountain.
