Brushy Ridge Trail Re-Opens In Burke County After Fire

NEBO, NC (May 3, 2019) — The Brushy Ridge Trail (#235) on the Grandfather Ranger District has re-opened.  Earlier this week firefighters were successful in direct suppression efforts to contain the Brushy Ridge Fire.

The Brushy Ridge fire was reported on Sunday afternoon in a remote area near the Linville River on the northeast side of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area on the US Forest Service Grandfather Ranger District in Burke County, NC.  The fire is 100% contained, there are no active flames and there are no known hot spots. This fire will not be called “out” until the fire receives significant rainfall

While the Brushy Ridge Trail is open, we ask that visitors avoid the area where the fire took place. Immediately following a wildfire there is a potential for hazards such as fire weakened trees, hidden stump holes, and unseen hot spots within the interior of the fire.

Law enforcement investigations confirmed the cause of the fire to be an abandoned campfire. Anyone with information about the cause of the fire is encouraged to call the Grandfather Ranger District Law Enforcement Officer at 828-652-2144.

As we move into the summer camping season, the US Forest Service reminds visitors to be careful with fire. Make sure all flames are extinguished with water or soil and coals are out cold before leaving your campsite.
