Banda Magda featured at Sails Original Music Series in Hickory

HICKORY, NC (September 20, 2016)…Friday, September 23, the City of Hickory’s 2016 Sails Original Music Series will feature Banda Magda. Led by Greek-born singer, accordionist, film scorer and composer, Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda combines jazz, Greek dance rhythms, and samba beats. Their songs, many sung in French, draw from the band’s global background and encompass jazz, Latin, and French pop.

Based out of New York, Banda Magda has band members from Japan, Argentina, and Greece. They have toured all over the world, and played their cleverly arranged, bouncy, and fun music in venues like The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and jazz clubs worldwide.

Sails Music Coordinator, Bob Sinclair, said, “Banda Magda is going to descend upon Hickory like a world-music whirlwind! Magda Giannikou has lived all around the world and brings those cultural influences to life in beautiful and interesting musical ways. She’ll be backed by a trio who play an astonishing array of song styles from tangos to folk songs. Banda Magda is a highly energetic ensemble and might just blow the Sails off the Square. This will be one of the most unique groups of the series!”

The show begins at 6 p.m. and audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Olde Hickory Brewery and Silver Fork Winery will sell beer and wine in designated areas, and there are a variety of close-by restaurants to patronize.
