AG Stein Reaches $131,000 Settlement over Medicare and Medicaid False Claims Act Allegations

RALEIGH, NC (May 16, 2017)…Attorney General Josh Stein announced today that North Carolina has reached a settlement with TeamHealth Holdings, as successor in interest to IPC Healthcare Inc., f/k/a IPC The Hospitalists Inc. (IPC). The agreement resolves allegations that IPC violated the False Claims Act by billing Medicare, Medicaid, the Defense Health Agency and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program for higher and more expensive levels of medical service than were actually performed (a practice known as “up-coding”).

“People who defraud Medicare and Medicaid are stealing your hard-earned taxpayer dollars,” said AG Stein. “I will do everything in my power to protect the taxpayer from fraud and abuse of these and other programs.”

TeamHealth Holdings has paid the federal government and other states a total of $60 million dollars. North Carolina will receive $131,508.80 in restitution and other recoveries.
