Western Piedmont Symphony’s “Summer Pops” returns to downtown Newton

HICKORY, NC (July 29, 2019) — The Western Piedmont Symphony will perform a free, outdoor concert, “Summer Pops: Symphony on the Square” as part of the Soldier’s Reunion Celebration on Sunday, August 11th.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the steps of the 1924 Courthouse in Downtown Newton.

The concert will be a true feast for the senses, as the beautiful music of the Symphony will be set to a cutting-edge, full-color laser light show produced by SELEM Artists.

The award-winning Western Piedmont Symphony, conducted by newly chosen Maestro Matthew Troy, will perform patriotic marches, Broadway show tunes, TV & movie themes, light classical favorites and a salute to our military. The concert will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon as well as showcase some patriotic favorites.

Invite family & friends, bring lawn chairs and enjoy refreshments from local businesses. As an additional treat, Guest Soprano, Jodi Burns, will sing and narrate on select pieces.

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at Newton-Conover Auditorium, 60 West 6th St., Newton.

The concert is made possible through the support of Peoples Bank, Tom Warlick and City of Newton.

The Western Piedmont Symphony, which is about to begin its 55th season, will perform under the direction of Maestro Matthew Troy. The roughly 70-piece orchestra draws talented and dedicated musicians from across North Carolina. These musicians have repeatedly won national acclaim, including two first place prizes in the American Prize national contest for the Professional Orchestra Division.
