Ski Resort Info and Weather
FYI – We use the Foothills Regional Airport for our “official” source of weather information. It is located on the Caldwell County and Burke County line in the southwestern part of Caldwell County. The National Weather Service designates this airport as the Morganton/Lenoir Airport (KMRN).
Grandfather Mountain Weather Station
The official National Weather Service Reporting Station located at the Swinging Bridge Visitor Center has been providing daily weather observations since August of 1955.
Gauges mounted on top of the Mile High Swinging Bridge collect data for the National Weather Service regional office in Asheville. A monthly record of that information is filed each month with the Department of Commerce.
Monitors with current weather readings are accessible to the public in the Top Shop Visitor Center and at the Nature Museum.
With rare exceptions, the temperature will be 10 to 20 degrees cooler at Grandfather Mountain than in the flatlands below. The average rate is 2.2 degrees per 1,000 feet, meaning that for each thousand feet gained, the air is 2.2 degrees cooler.
